Ken River Lodge, Panna Tiger Reserve

Just 25km from Khajuraho in the North Indian state of Madhya Pradesh lies the Panna Tiger Reserve. Although at the time of writing this, the High Court of India has stopped all safaris in national parks until further notice. But when things become clear, the Panna Tiger Reserve is one of the most important places to visit for nature lovers travelling to India.
I came across the Ken River Lodge when searching for places to stay in and near Khajuraho. You can stay on an American or Jungle plan, with the latter providing all meals, cottage or hut, guide and taxes.
The place is just great, full of rustic beauty and you really feel that you are away from anything urban. I recommend it!

Human Towers

Anyone who has been to Catalunya will know the fascination of watching a human tower raise itself. Layer of standing people supported by a base of strength and lots of human hands and arms, along with a myriad of motivational shouts and words from the surrounding crowd. It is truly a unique cultural icon of Catalunya. The colours and bandanas are important, as is the one gruff man shouting orders from the base.
Dahi Handi, a festival representing God’s mischievous side, and celebrating the birth of Krishna, takes place around India as Janmaashtami, or Krishnashtami. It consists of trained people forming pyramid-like towers to reach a hanging pot of butter - a tradition called uriadi.
Both create dangerously impressive towers, both for an objective. Both provide entertainment, cultural wealth, and happiness for perpetrators and spectators alike. Above all though, they remain monuments (human monuments, so temporary) to the age old traditions of both cultures.
Travel to India for August to see the festival in the north…

A Different Side to India…

It’s like escaping from a bubble. Comfortable in the life you lead, thinking you know a lot or at least a little. Doing your day to day and challenging yourself, always in the knowledge that you are aware of your environment. Then you see the reality and you step down a rung to begin learning again. A humbling and exceptionally satisfying experience – to understand that you know not what you know; that there is always more.
I saw for the first time a side of India I had never experienced. Comparing the pureness of cultures within itself seems almost foolish, so instead I will explain it for what it is.

Health in India

Medicine and Medical Help
Bring your own medicines if you are taking any. Brand names may differ as all medicines are manufactured locally. If you ever need a doctor, please ask the hotel to recommend one. Most hotels have some physicians on call at all times.
Vaccinations
Please consult Public Health Services and / or your physician for their current recommendations. Review your health insurance policies / coverage if you are covered for overseas treatment, hospitalization and medical evacuation. Get a physical. It is better at home than on road. Get any needed immunizations. Have your prescriptions filled. Take extra doses separately.

THE HISTORY OF INCREDIBLE INDIA

India’s history and culture is dynamic, spanning back to the beginning of human civilization. It begins with a mysterious culture along the Indus River and in farming communities in the southern lands of India. The history of India is punctuated by constant integration of migrating people with the diverse cultures that surround India. Available evidence suggests that the use of iron, copper and other metals was widely prevalent in the Indian sub-continent at a fairly early period, which is indicative of the progress that this part of the world had made. By the end of the fourth millennium BC, India had emerged as a region of highly developed civilization.
